Outstanding Leicester College learner, Tanya Simmons, has received the Helena Kennedy Foundation Award for overcoming significant obstacles, which will enable her to complete her studies.
Tanya was nominated for the award by the College for her work as a course representative and student governor, which she managed to fit in whilst being on a full-time course, working part-time and also having to deal with a personal issue which meant she had to support herself through her time at college.
Having studied for a BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care Learning and Development at Leicester College, Tanya will now be studying for a Joint Honours Degree in Social Care and Education Studies at the University of Northampton. She then hopes to become a Primary School Teacher.
The Helena Kennedy Foundation Award is designed to support learners in Further Education who have overcome significant obstacles to complete their education in their progression to Higher Education. Tanya will receive a bursary to progress onto Higher Education as part of the award.
Leicester College Student Liaison Team Leader, Julie Sharma said: “During her time at College being a course representative and student governor, Tanya gave up time to attend meetings and became involved in campaigns that supported the views of the student population. Despite many obstacles, Tanya has always dedicated 100% to her role and has shown enthusiasm and drive in everything she has done to support other learners. I’m positive Tanya’s drive for life will be carried through into her time at university.”
Tanya said: “I was surprised when I was told I had been nominated by Leicester College for this award, but I am very grateful for it.”
