School unveils art mural

11/08/2010

A group effort between Aim Higher, Babington Community Technology College and Leicester College to create a graffiti themed art mural was celebrated with an unveiling of the piece at Babington this summer.

The piece, which was created to represent the school, now takes pride of place in one of the schools refectories.

A group of eight year nine students came together through the Aim Higher project, which aims to build confidence, self-esteem and inspire students to progress on to further education after school.  They worked on the project for six weeks in workshops at the school and at the College.  Art and Design tutor at Leicester College, Stephanie Garvey was on hand to help the students with the design of the mural and HND Photography learner, Miles Marr offered his help with photographing the art work to create the mural.  Miles said: “It was a good project to be part of and help the school out.  The mural will hopefully be around for a long time.  It’s nice for the students to see the results of their hard work.”

Babington Community Technology College student, Dominik Liggins said: “I enjoyed painting and learning about the different styles of graffiti.  It was a good experience.”

Craig Sweeney-Essex, External Placement Officer, Babington Community Technology College said: “It was a difficult task produced in a short time, but what was produced is good.  The students enjoyed going to Leicester College and it’s helped them to be able to make more informed choices in the run up to our options process and also Post 16.

“We worked well with Leicester College and hope to work on more projects with them in the future.”
