Scarecrows and bug boxes on the agenda for College autumn allotment fun
28/10/2010
Local people are being invited to try their hand at making scarecrows and bug boxes at their local community venues during Colleges’ Week at Leicester College during 8-14 November 2010.
With the winter months drawing in, people will be given the perfect opportunity to go along to their local outreach centre and find out how learning can be fun by taking part in free seasonal workshops, demonstrations and taster sessions.
The week’s activities will culminate with an open day at the Enderby allotment, with a scarecrow presentation and display. The College Frith Outreach Centre teaches lessons at the allotment through the ‘Place to Grow’ Enderby Garden project.
Leicester College will also be opening the doors of its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) outreach centres to the local community during the week to take part in Vocational Skills days. Learners will be offering free beauty and hairdressing treatments, providing advice on food and nutrition and hosting a charity coffee morning.
Maggie Galliers, Leicester College Principal said: “We are excited to celebrate Colleges’ Week and to highlight the opportunities that colleges create for individuals in the UK. The outreach centres at Leicester College play an important role for the local communities they serve by helping people learn new skills to improve their employability, and more widely by promoting community cohesion.”
Colleges’ Week is in its third year and it is the education sector’s major showcase for the vital role that colleges play in providing people of all ages and businesses in the UK with the opportunities they need to succeed. Organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC), Colleges Week is all about helping learners make informed decisions about which route to further education is right for them, under the banner Your Future, Your Choice.
