Leicester College will be commemorating the Holocaust with a Memorial Day event on Thursday 27 January. This is part of a project funded by Leicester City Council called “Taking a Stand”, which the College is running with St Philip’s Centre as part of its commitment to promote equality and diversity.
This event has been organised by the College Chaplaincy Team to raise awareness of the Holocaust, to tell some of the ‘untold stories’ and to look at some of the world atrocities that have happened in more recent times. It will include talks on the Holocaust and other genocides by Professor Aubrey Newman from Leicester University and Humanist Chaplain, Chris Williams, and Baha’i Chaplain, Minou Courtazzirowshan will be discussing the persecution of the Baha’is. The event is accompanied by a tutorial that will be delivered to students.
Those taking part in the event will be asked to write a dedication to go onto a Tree of Life. Ruth Pickersgill, Diversity Manager for the College said, “We feel it is really important for our students to remember the genocide of the Holocaust and to commemorate those who died or lost their families, but we also want them to reflect on why it happened, and what we can all do to prevent any further atrocities world-wide as part of our citizenship work.”
