Former Leicester College learner to compete in WorldSkills 2011
Ross Varnam, 21, a former Leicester College Auto Body Repair Apprentice, will be representing Team UK in WorldSkills 2011.
WorldSkills London 2011 will be the world’s largest, international skills competition with young people from across the globe competing to be the best of the best in their chosen skill and Ross will be competing in the Autobody Repair category.
Ross was put forward for the competition by his employers, Parkers, after becoming one of the six finalists in the bodyshop magazine young body part technician of the year competition. He started out with the company after doing two weeks work experience. Impressed with his attitude and potential, Parkers appointed Ross as an apprentice leading on to a permanent employment as a Body Repair Technician. Asked how Ross feels about competing in WorldSkills 2011 Ross said “I’m really excited, it’s fantastic to be nominated for WorldSkills and represent the UK. I am really thrilled to be in the work that I do”.
Leicester College, Motor Vehicle Lecturer, Trevor Causon said: “When Ross started the course, I saw he had potential, so it came as no surprise to hear about his success in the UKSkills competition. We were proud of him before the competition and we will support him however we can leading up to the WorldSkills event. We wish him the very best in the competition.”
Hassan Sardoiwala, Parkers, said “The body repair industry is competitive and having Ross in the competition showcases the level of skills and expertise of our staff. We are very proud of Ross; it is something special to be in this competition.”
150,000 expected visitors will see 1,000 competitors from more than 50 countries/regions competing in 46 skill areas over four exciting days of competition. Visitors can “Have a Go” at dozens of skills ranging from electronics to plumbing, web design and fashion to cabinet making.
Leicester College along with other colleges and organisations will be exhibiting and running demonstrations at the event whilst giving support to Ross Varnam as he competes to win WorldSkills 2011 in the Autobody Repair category.
