Leicester College slam dunks new partnership with Leicester Riders

09/11/2011

Leicester College has officially launched a joint sports education partnership with Leicester Riders unlocking a wealth of opportunities for both organisations.

It will see work experience opportunities for learners from sports, hospitality, media and other courses during the next year, guest talks by Leicester Riders who will also be at

Student shooting hoops!Open Days at the College at which learners can find out more about the sporting discipline, discounted game tickets and other activities regionally and nationally.

Work experience opportunities include placements for learners in catering at matches, stewarding, shadowing the MC and photographers, and working in the Leicester Riders office on tasks such as ticket sales and corporate bookings.

Drew Sullivan, Leicester Riders player and GB team captain, said that he believes that the partnership will encourage more learners to become involved in playing basketball.

Rob Paternostro, head coach of Leicester Riders (who are currently at the #3 position in the BBL standings) said: “For someone who has played the game for 13 years, and now into my 4th season as a coach, I understand how important it was for me to be introduced to the sport and I know that this is an excellent opportunity for young people to be introduced to the sport, not just to play the game but to make lasting friendships and new contacts”.

Claire Willis, Curriculum Area Manager Hospitality and Leisure, said “We have an extensive range of courses in sports and I am eagerly looking forward to this partnership of which I know our learners will be the major beneficiaries. I think of people such as Ramiah O’Neill who graduated with his BTEC National Diploma in Sports Coaching from Leicester College and who now plays with Leicester Riders. He was introduced to basketball at primary school which continued through college and this partnership can help so many more.”
