A 3-D design by Chirag Maheskumar, currently studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design at Leicester College, will be the Christmas card cover that goes out to hundreds of members of the Leicester Chamber of Commerce this year.
“I was so surprised when my tutor told me that I won,” said Chirag, “It was a last minute decision to enter, just 48 hours before the deadline.”
His design is of a snowman and two children which he feels typifies Christmas. However it was the process of creating the design in 48 hours that was awe-inspiring. He first painted the scene in water colours, and then cut out the images. Using natural lighting to get the shadows he photographed the cut-outs and enhanced the 3-D image using photo-editing software.
“I combined all the subjects I have studied in my course – sketching, painting, photography and computer graphics,” the aspiring Illustrator Graphic Designer said.
His tutor, Kate Drew, said this year’s entries were particularly strong and the Chamber had found it difficult to choose.
Chamber President and local businessman Rick Moore JP commented: “The Chamber has been working with Leicester College for many years now, inviting its learner to submit Christmas card designs. The standard of the cards is always excellent and, because of this, we always have a very tough job selecting which card to use!”
