14 to 19 Diplomas

What is a Diploma?

A diploma is an exciting new qualification which is available to all 14 to 19-year-old learners. It offers practical hands-on experience alongside innovative classroom learning. The skills learnt studying a Diploma are highly valued by employers and universities.

Why have Diplomas been introduced?

Diplomas will provide you with a broader choice of options and allow you to tailor your education according to your needs. They sit alongside GCSEs, A Levels and Apprenticeships. They do not replace any of these other qualifications.

What skills will I learn?

The Diplomas are based around broad subject areas and include project based learning for specific industry sectors. They will also include practical learning of functional skills in English, maths and ICT which are developed around everyday life and work.

You will acquire analytical, research and practical skills which will be essential for you to succeed in employment and further learning.

You will also spend time on work experience with an employer during your Diploma study. This will offer you a better understanding of what your future career may entail.

What qualifications will I achieve?

You will receive a Diploma qualification at one of three levels:

  • Foundation: equivalent to five GCSEs at grade D to E
  • Higher: equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A* to C
  • Advanced: equivalent to three-and-a-half A levels
