College Principal to go back to the floor

ImageLeicester College Principal Maggie Galliers will become a Fabrication and Welding apprentice for a day during Apprenticeship Week which starts on 1 February 2010.

During the day, Maggie will shadow 27-year old Luke Baber from Broughton Astley.  Luke works at Astley Fabrications whilst studying for his Advanced Apprenticeship in Fabrication and Welding at Leicester College.  The Principal will gain an insight into the sheet metal and fabrication work which is part of his vocational qualification.

Leicester College will also be celebrating Apprenticeship Week by opening its doors for school pupils interested in Apprenticeships.  Pupils from local schools will be given the chance to shadow a Leicester College Apprentice Learner in areas such as Construction, Engineering, Childcare, Business, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy.

Maggie said: “I’m looking forward to experiencing life as an apprentice at Leicester College through shadowing Luke.  Apprenticeship Week is a real opportunity to demonstrate the benefits apprentices bring to the organisations they work for.  Bringing fresh talent into an organisation with new skills and expertise is essential to remain competitive, particularly in the current economic climate.”
