Leicester College Learner Wins PDAs Master of the Rolls Title

 Dennis McGinley, 20, was announced the champion at a special award’s ceremony - held at the PDA’s Gala Dinner in Harrogate - in front of hundreds of industry representatives.

Candidates from across the East and West Midlands, as well as South Yorkshire, entered the contest, which was held at New College Nottingham in September. The results were kept tightly under wraps until the Gala event.

The challenge tested the ability of apprentices - aged from 17 to 23 - to match and cut paper accurately, get levels on borders correctly in place and apply paper smoothly with no blisters. Brewers sponsored the wallpaper for the event.

Dennis - who is studying for a NVQ Level 3 in painting and decorating at Leicester College - won £300 cash and a set of tools.

Paul Marsden, chief executive of the PDA, said: “This competition is recognised across our industry as a showcase of the nation’s talent in the decorating industry.

“It is a demanding contest, which challenges candidates’ time-planning skills, and their ability to work to a deadline, whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality in terms of the finished standard of work.

“Every year, the quality of the craftmanship is superb, and this year was no exception. Dennis has done exceptionally well.”

Dennis works for DT Evans & Son Ltd of Southam and lives in Coventry.
