Julia Marinho - BTEC Certificate in Design (Fashion and Textiles)

Julia studied in Portugal where she completed a degree in Translation in 2001, but coming from a family involved in textiles and from a country where textiles have been important to the economy, she became involved in the industry. She worked as a commercial assistant and merchandiser before moving to England to work as a sample room manager. Julia enrolled on this course as she wanted to know more about the process from designing to making the pattern to making the garment.

In the future, Julia would like to have her own business designing and making ladies’ shirts and T-shirts. she said: "Fashion is a very competitive area and I feel that to keep up with the pace of the industry you have to be constantly learning."

She added: "The course has been an eye opener. It has allowed me to have a better understanding of the whole process of garment making. The opportunities for further study are much greater in the UK. You are never too old to learn and make a new start."
