Hairdressing in the UK is a £3.8 billion industry, with more than 180,000 employees in around 31,000 businesses. The sector experiences high staff turnover and difficulty in recruiting senior stylists and barbers. This can be linked to the fact that many junior stylists do not get past the NVQ level 2 and there is an over reliance on recruiting staff under the age of 26. There are many reasons for this but one of the biggest for many businesses is the perceived time and expense involved in training. However, training staff creates its own benefits to businesses with more competent and confident staff helping to improve business reputation and customer satisfaction and loyalty.
