Advice from our Careers Advisers:

If you don't receive the grades you need to obtain your Conditional Firm/Insurance place at university, please contact the universities directly to negotiate or log onto Track Progress on the UCAS website using the same password that you used to apply with to check whether in fact they have accepted you.

Clearing will be available from the middle of July for some students on particular courses, however for A Levels this begins the same day that the A-level results are released to the schools and students.

If you are unsure about your UCAS application (or if you can enter Clearing) contact the UCAS Helpline 0871 468 0468 please be prepared to wait as they can be very busy. Please make sure you have your UCAS ID Number ready as you will be asked you for this. UCAS will be able to inform you if:

  • you have been successful
  • your application has been forwarded to your Insurance place
  • you have been rejected and are now able to enter into Clearing.

Every year thousands of students use the Clearing system to find another course which will accept their grades.

If eligible you will automatically be entered for Clearing and will be sent a Clearing Passport Letter which will show all your details. If you have not received the letter please check Track Progress on the UCAS website or if in doubt please ring UCAS on 0871 468 0468.
Clearing procedures change slightly every year, and vary between universities, so please visit www.ucas.co.uk/clearing for up to date information. A step by step guide to Clearing is also available on this site which you may find useful.

How to find courses:

The Internet: The UCAS website (www.ucas.com) has the latest Clearing vacancies. A list of vacancies showing which universities/colleges have vacancies for which courses will be displayed on the Course Search facility on this site. Vacancy listings will be updated continually throughout the Clearing period. Many universities also have a Clearing section on their websites. You can often sign up for email alerts to enable you to be sent information about courses that are being offered through Clearing as they become available.

Telephone: BBC exam results helpline - 0808 100 8000
Call free for expert, independent information and advice on applying for university or college, taking time out or choosing to enter employment. All calls are dealt with in confidence by specially trained advisers who have access to an online database, developed by UCAS and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), which will provide up-to-the-minute information on course availability.

Newspapers: The national newspapers will carry information about vacancies and features about Clearing.

Next Steps

Once you have found a vacancy - The next step is to contact the University of your choice to see if they still have places available and if your grades meet their requirements. Try to find out as much information as possible about the course before contacting the university and before accepting a place. Most universities have a Clearing Information Day, which you can attend. Please ensure that you are available for interview if required.

When you contact universities and colleges you will be asked your Clearing Number and your I.D. Number which is shown on your Clearing Passport Letter this will be sent to you by UCAS. If they offer you a place and you wish to accept it, you will be asked to send the whole Clearing Passport to the university or college. They will have access to your original UCAS Application form so there is no need to send anything else unless they request you to do so.

If you are unsuccessful in applying for a course through Clearing there are options available. Why not consider:

  • Retakes: Second time round you will get a chance to improve on your grades.
  • Year out: You could gain work experience, travel or even retake courses part-time.
  • Seeking advice from a Careers or Connexions Personal Adviser.

Good Luck in whatever you decide
