Learning Mentors, Mental Health and Counselling ServicesFeedback
What makes a Leicester College mentor?
Mentors are adults from the local community, with positive experiences of the world of learning and work. They are people who are willing to work with an individual learner, over a given period, providing consistent support, with regular meetings, within the environment of Leicester College.
This support may be practical and around helping you negotiate with tutors or manage your coursework better. Mentors also have a wide pastoral and befriending role and work to get to know you better. Through their own experience and skills, they can also help in many other ways.
Specific, measurable, achievable goals may be identified and agreed for you to work towards and for the mentor to monitor. Throughout the process, the mentoring relationship will be supported and monitored by the College, although a confidentiality agreement will be made between you and your mentor.
How is a mentor assigned?
This can be done in two ways. You are encouraged to self-refer. You may request to have a mentor by asking your tutor. Mentors also distribute various promotional materials within curriculum areas that they are assigned to, giving information on how you can contact them if you would like to meet.
Alternatively, a tutor will liaise with mentor/s assigned to their curriculum area when they feel they have a learner who could benefit from having a mentor. The reason a tutor may refer can range from poor attendance, behavioural problems, lack of progress or maybe an instinctive feeling that the learner they are referring is struggling in some way.
Mental Health Service
Leicester College offers on-going support for learners and staff with mental health issues. Often, if you are finding it difficult to cope, this can impact on your studies and your ability to achieve your full potential. Getting support, advice and information at an early stage can be really useful, helping you to plan your studies and look at what other support might be available. If you feel you would like information or advice on subjects such as confidence, depression, drug/alcohol use or any other mental health issue, please feel free to get in touch. This service is open to both College learners and staff.
Counselling
There are times when we all need some extra support or are troubled about something. At Leicester College we offer a safe, free and confidential counselling service for all learners. Our team of dedicated, experienced counsellors are on-hand to listen and understand. They can help you to express yourself, understand yourself better and help work out what to do.
