Student UnionFeedback
The Student Union is run by learners, for learners, and allows you to get your voice heard by the upper tiers of management. We are a group of learners who are voted into position to form the Executive Committee.
There are 24 posts which include the President, Women’s Officer, Welfare Officer, International Students Officer and Campaigns Officer, and all have specific roles and responsibilities.
It’s not all meetings though! The Student Union also gets involved in campaigns from World AIDS Day and Water Aid to domestic violence and charity events for the College Charity of the Year. The Union is also actively involved in putting on trips and sports activities for fellow learners.
In short, our Student Union is a vibrant and energetic place to be, and mirrors the College values of diversity, inclusion and equality. So if you want to do something more with your time, then please get involved.
Darren Kay
SU President
While Darren Kay has ambitions to be a star of the stage, he’s been perfectly happy playing a supporting role in his time at Leicester College.
Soon after enrolling onto the Foundation Degree in Acting, Darren was elected as a Course Representative, which saw him act as the mouthpiece for his fellow learners who wanted a say on College matters.
From there, he progressed to Higher Education Officer at the Student Union, before being elected as Student Union President.
“Each of these roles has been about making sure the learners at Leicester College have their voice heard,” said Darren.
“Whether I have been putting across the views of how exams and lessons are structured to curriculum staff as a Course Rep, or attending national conferences as President, everything has been for the good of learners at Leicester College.
“The learners need to have a voice, and as President of the Student Union, I am there to make sure they have their say, no matter who they are, or what course they are on.
“Leicester College is one of the best in the country for recognising and respecting the diversity of its learners, and supporting people, no matter what their background or beliefs may be.
“I am proud to be part of that process, and a College which prides itself on its safe and happy environment.”
Darren’s role as President allows him to oversee the varied activities the Student Union arranges, including charity work, student trips and social events.
“I’ve made so many new friends since being part of the Student Union,” he added.
“It’s fun, you get to meet people and I would encourage other learners to get involved or find out more about what the Union can do for them.”
